I would like to welcome you to our newly formed very special engineering center of excellence.
On March 15, 2014 the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a large grant for five years to the University of Denver, the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC), and the Michigan Technological University (MTU) to build an Industry/Cooperative Research Center for Novel High Voltage/Temperature Materials and Structures, or for short the HVT Center. The Center was formally opened on June 2, 2014 during our first meeting attended by 11 large US industries (please see the members section of the website).
Three years ago my distinguished colleagues from UIUC (Professors Iwona Jasiuk and Martin Ostoja-Starzewski) and MTU (Professor Greg Odegard) and I came out with an idea to build a research Center as part of the NSF IUCRC network in the area of novel materials and structures subjected to extreme in-service conditions. After three years of intense national competitions the Center was finally awarded in the beginning of this year to our delight and to the delight of our graduate students and industrial sponsors. Thank you NSF for putting so much trust in our research abilities. The primary thrust of the Center, at present, is in the direction of high voltage and high temperature materials for a variety of applications. The current members are some of the most influential corporations in the affected engineering areas. Without their enormous support our Center would not be possible.
There are only about 40 Centers across the nation in all branches of engineering; therefore our Center is a very unique academic/industrial entity created to educate graduate students at the highest level by allowing them to have full access to some of the best US engineers involved in the Center from the participating industries. Despite the fact that the Center was opened only a few months ago, we are rapidly expanding our membership group and the research projects funded by the Center. At present we are in close negations with about five or more other companies eager to become our members.
The HVT Center will provide a forum for industry/university cooperative research including evaluation, design, modeling, and development of novel high voltage and high temperature materials and structures for energy transfer, aerospace, automotive and other applications. These are all areas critical to the future of the nation and the rest of the world. The HVT Center will utilize the most advanced aerospace technologies to design novel materials and structures for the next generation electrical grid. The aggressive environment of the high voltage grid will drive innovations that will benefit other industries such as aerospace, oil, transportation, and many others. It will create value for its members by: (1) access to complementary university, state, federal or privately funded research, (2) leveraging of NSF funds to support industrially relevant fundamental research, (3) charging only 10 % overhead cost! (compared to 50 % in traditional industry sponsored academic research), (4) royalty free access to intellectual property and pre-publication access to research results, (5) pool of highly trained graduate students at all three sites, and 6) access to state of the art research equipment at DU, UIUC and MTU.
